KENTUCKY PIED DE POULE II (2012)

Brazilian born, London based artist
first show in NYC,
KENTUCKY PIED DE POULE,
is at CRG Gallery.

"Da Cunha takes everyday objects-
beach towels, curtain railings, mop heads-
and turns them into sculpture that, at a cursory glance,
ask to be considered formally,
with Modernist and Minimalist language."

The KENTUCKY PIED DE POULE series refers to
the elegantly woven tapestries
that are made from dyed mop heads!!!

"Kentucky" is the brand of the mop,
while "pied de poule" is French
for the houndstooth pattern,
created by the woven mops!!!

Da Cunha's improvisational & interesting use of
traditional commercial objects
that are transformed into daring "works of art,"
makes this extraordinary exhibition
an accessorator's "must-see"!!!

Design/merchandising guru Bruce Tilley
has recently opened
an "accessorator's paradise"!!!

This "updated" luxury consignment shop features
furniture, antiques, accessories, & art ....
from decorators & their clients,
wholesalers, manufacturers, & individuals.

The store's concept is to feature an extensive,
ever-changing inventory
of well displayed unique, stylish, chic
& tasteful designer merchandise
at "moderate prices."

According to Tilley, he has created
"a consignment gallery
with an elevated design aesthetic."

Décor NYC is an "accessorator's dream,"
a well curated store .....
where we can buy "great new stuff,"
& sell the "great old stuff"
we already have!!!

I adore the work of English designer
& have been a major "groupie" for several years.

Her recent nomination, in two categories,
for Designer of the Year
by London's Design Museum is well deserved!!!

Bethan is nominated in the furniture category for her
laminated marquetry furniture collection
"MOON ROCK, created exclusively for Milan's
This series is inspired by "craters of the moon
& the composition of the solar system."

In addition, these spectacular patterns
inspired the stunning textiles
that made Bethan a beguiling, walking "lunar landscape"
during the  Milan Furniture Fair!!!

Bethan's jewelry collection "PARTICLE" ......
which I was lucky enough to see at the "Composite" show
during London Design Week .......
began as a way to salvage the "leftover bits"
from her "PARTICLE" furniture series.
It has expanded to an extensive
collection of stunning bracelets & necklaces!!!

Bethan's work is included in the
"Designers of the Year 2012" exhibition, opening
tomorrow at London's Design Museum!!!!

This is a "must see" exhibition for all
dedicated "accessorators"!!!

What is a MHOY?????

It's a "protest pet" designed by  Cyril Anguelidis
& a group of French graffiti artists!!
Beginning as sticker art in Paris, it has evolved
into this three dimensional, recycled,
poly resin sculpture!!!

Evoking the struggle for animal rights,
a MHOY may look like a loudspeaker but,
it is really a heart touching creature ....
who "protests in silence"!!!!

By adopting a MHOY, we recognize this struggle ......
5% of all sales go directly to PETA .......
a charity that fights for the dignity of all animals!!!

I bought a dozen to give to all my favorite
"animal loving accessorator's"!!!

The title of the show refers to Pensato's return
to her 1970's iconic Batman images.
They are the primary subject & inspiration
for this exhibition.

Of course, Batman does not go solo .....
by including her old favorites ....
Homer Simpson, Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck
& a character she refers to as "The Juicer,"
Pensato continues her passion for
 iconic cartoon imagery.

Known for her strictly black, white & grey palette,
she has infused this exhibition with touches of color ......
& lots included of "stuff"!!!!

Showing her propensity for being an
"accessorator supreme",
Pensato incorporates various toys, objects, props,
& assorted ephemera from her studio .....
recreating the studio's environment
in Petzel's gallery.

I have always been a fan of Pensato's
"pop iconography",
but referencing her studio space
sends me into "accessorator heaven"!!!
DIVINE!!!!

Rotterdam's Galerie VIVID presented "ContainersII"
by Antwerp design geniuses Studio Job ...
at Design/Miami 2011.

The project began with the designers discovery of a collection
of incomplete antique crystal pieces
at the warehouses of Belgian crystal manufacturer

They incorporated five vessels into this paradoxical work .....
referencing the contrasts of today ....
function & surreal, rich & poor, good & evil,
fantasy & reality,
and high & low culture.

I think all of the pieces are fabulous "accessorations" ......
but the "Stewpan" is my particular favorite!!!

It's definitely a "boat" that could "sail" across my bookcase!!!

Italian fashion house Fendi sponsored
the "Design Performance" at Design/Miami 2011.

Fendi invited designer  Elisa Strozyk and
artist Sebastian Neeb to create this years project .....
"Craft Alchemy."

Collaborating to create a dream-like neoclassical interior,
inspired by Rome's historic Palazzo Fendi,
Stroykz & Neeb redesigned ornate 18th century furniture by
braiding, weaving, embossing, & sewing
discarded leather scraps from the Fendi factory.

The result is a divine collection of enchanted objects!!!!

Stroykz & Neeb also created delightful
"furniture marionettes,"
leather furniture created from Fendi scraps,
suspended from the ceiling by strings!!!

I also adored the "studio" the designers had set up .....
creating additional pieces & talking to fair visitors,
creating a  "furniture performance"!!!

from Hudson, NY antique dealer Mark McDonald,
was a "stand-out accessoration" at

According to Mark, the piece was made by
a unique design company that is ....
"blurring the boundaries between art, architecture,
entertainment & information"
by displacing, transforming & manipulating exiting objects!!!

I adored this piece ........
It qualifies for my "accessoration everything" list!!

#1 COLOR - It's Hermes orange, my very favorite color!!!
#2 ART & MOTION - It is a kinetic piece of sculpture!!!
#3 SCALE - It's over-the-top enormously huge!!!
#4 REPURPOSING - Each unit was originally a sink!!!

It's truly fabulous!!!!!

Every NYC design junkie knows "accessorator favorite"
Kevin Brynan & Bill Cleary's
a Greenwich Street design tradition!!!!

But, if you happen to walk past it by mistake,
these divine yarn wrapped construction poles scream ....
"look at me"!!!

The store windows and the poles celebrate
a unique collection of creatures called
"JouJou" dolls!!!

This bevy of colorful knit beauties
are handmade by a Haitian women's cooperative,
from recycled and donated yarns ....
it's a fabulous project!!!

And, in addition to paying the woman a fair wage,
one dollar from the sale of each doll
goes back to the coop .....
helping to empower the women's self sufficiency!!!!

P.S. ACCESSORATOR"S NEWS FLASH .....
Congratulations to Kevin and Bill
who opened a second
last week, in Jersey City!!!!

My friend, English artist Karen Ryan is probably one of the
most interesting and talented women I know!!!!

Her "Sit" chair project" for the 2011  London Design Festival
could not be found at any of the usual venues!!!!

"The "sit" chair project is an alternative response to London Design Week 2011. I have taken two chairs, one from my dinning room table and one from my bedroom, both of which had been previously discarded. I designed the "sit" brand for the use of these chairs, the brand identity is hand stamped upon a newly prepared surface area on each individual chair."

"Through mass consumerism we are used to looking at design as objects of desire fed by what is fashionable and are own delusions of need. I want to divert the gaze and alter the senses. I am taking both "sit"chairs out onto the streets and photographing people sitting on them with my mobil phone."

"I consider the "sit" chair project a relevant design and comment on contemporary furniture design today."
                                                                               - Karen Ryan -

I spent last Thursday evening with Karen,
walking around London's Brompton Design District!!!!

Being with Karen is always a brilliant treat for me ......
and I was beyond over--the-moon that
one of her chairs joined us!!!!!

Design Festival Poster.jpg
English designer (and my friend!) Lisa Whatmough,
owner of the fabulous London furniture company .......
was asked by the London Transport Museum
to create this divine bespoke sofa .......
to be used on the posters that appeared in the Underground Tube stations
during the London Design Festival!!!!!

Made from the famous "moquette" fabric,
which has been used to upholster seating across the
London Transport system for over 100 years.

Lisa incorporated some of the most iconic patterns,
including the bold District Line pattern
designed by Misha Black in 1978 ...
and the Green Line moquette.

In addition, Lisa created a bespoke chair that was auctioned-off
at the Tent London design exhibition last week.

Surrounded by loads of people trying to "win" the chair ......
it was almost impossible to get it's picture!!!!
But, here it is!!!
Wish I'd won it ......... don't you!!!
