The Public Art Fund is one of the great treasures of New York City. For over thirty years it has sponsored artist's projects and exhibitions in public spaces throughout the city. Currently on view at the Plaza at Central Park is this delightful sculpture, The Ego and The Id, by celebrated Viennese artist Franz West. The 20 foot high aluminum sculpture combines two brightly colored, looping abstract forms ..... one all bubble gum pink and the other combining bright shades of blue, green. orange, and yellow. In addition, each of the playful pieces curve up at the "ends", creating whimsical stools for the public to sit on. West believes that "the sculpture is only truly complete once the viewer interacts."
Judging from the smiling faces of the children (and grown-ups!) I saw engaging with this magical sculpture ...... climbing, sitting, hugging, banging, and playing on it ...... there is no question as to the "completion" of the work and its enormous success!!!!!
Thank you to The Public Art Fund and its supporters from all New Yorkers for a joyful moment in time!!!!
